Italy has bid a tearful farewell to one of its most iconic football heroes, Salvatore "Totò" Schillaci. The former striker of the Italian national team, Juventus, and Inter Milan passed away at the age of 59 after a long battle with colon cancer, for which he had undergone two surgeries. His condition had worsened dramatically in recent days, and he died at 9:55 AM at the Civico Hospital in Palermo, surrounded by loved ones.

Schillaci was not only a beloved footballer but also a symbol of hope and pride for the city of Palermo. Known for his humility and kind spirit, Totò never let fame change him. He became a national hero during the 1990 World Cup, where his fierce determination and unforgettable goals earned him the status of an unexpected protagonist in Italy's "Notti Magiche" (Magical Nights).

Palermo’s mayor, Roberto Lagalla, expressed the deep sorrow felt by the city at the loss of its most representative footballer on the world stage. "For Italy, Schillaci’s eyes and goals during the 1990 World Cup symbolized hope, but for Palermo, they meant so much more. He was an example of resilience during difficult times for our city," Lagalla said. To honor Schillaci’s memory, the city will host a public wake at the Stadio Barbera, allowing fans to pay their final respects to the great champion.

Schillaci's football journey began at Messina before he moved on to Juventus and Inter Milan. He later became a trailblazer for Italian players abroad when he ended his career in Japan with Jubilo Iwata. Despite his battle with illness, he remained a beloved figure in the hearts of football fans who will forever remember his wild, determined gaze as he chased glory during those unforgettable nights of Italia 90.
